Blastocyst culture is a technique that is developed for In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). This procedure increases the pregnancy rates and decreases the multiple pregnancies risk. It mimics the natural growth pattern as they have transit in the fallopian tubes. During the natural cycle fertilization, the eggs are fertilized by the sperms in the fallopian tubes in the outer one-third called ampulla. By peristaltic movement the eggs are slowly rolled toward the uterus and on the fifth day end the eggs reach uterine cavity. This stage enhances the sticking capability of the eggs to the endometrium of the uterus, after blastocyst hatching from the shell called Zona Pellucida. The blastocyst culture doubles the implantation rates. 

When is blastocyst transfer recommended ?

Many hospitals are now offering blastocyst transfer in order to improve chances of getting pregnant after single embryo transfer. This is particularly recommended for younger women with a good prognosis for pregnancy from IVF. Doctor may also advice blastocyst transfer if you have developed good quality embryos in a previous IVF cycle but they failed to implant in the womb. It is usually not recommended if you produce fewer than normal healthy eggs.

If the couple has limited embryos and meager chances for the growth of the embryo then they are advised for “Sequential Transfer”. The same doctor undertakes both the transfers to avoid chaos by using soft catheters to avoid sibling embryos and endometrium.
